Hey readers, it’s Shaina and Reina, we’re freshies and this our first time writing news. We had this weird idea to write articles about food, that’s made from the recipes on BuzzFeed, what we think about it, what it tasted like, and so forth. If any of you had specific recipes you’d like us to try, leave a comment down below. Cheers, love!

For our first recipe we wanted to try something easy and simple. What better than the Buzzfeed microwave mug cake? We’ll give it a try and tell you how it goes. The ingredients are fairly easy and accessible, and the baking process is ultra fast.

-Shaina

Here’s how you make it:

You will need…

  • 2 tablespoons of melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons of  milk
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons of self rising flour (or mix ½ a teaspoon of baking powder, a pinch of salt, and 6 tablespoons of regular all purpose flour)
  • A pinch of salt for flavor
  • A heat safe mug
  • Sprinkles (Optional)
  • Frosting (Optional)

Directions

  1. Put the butter and the egg into your chosen mug and whisk with a fork.
  2. Add the milk, vanilla extract, sugar, flour, and the salt.
  3. Mix until smooth with no lumps.
  4. Add sprinkles or other flavoring.
  5. Microwave on high for 1 minute (varies from microwave to microwave)
-TIP: if you stick a toothpick through and comes out clean, then it’s baked-
  6. Frost and decorate as desired.

Hi everybody, it’s Shaina! Today I “baked” a cake in the microwave and it was enjoyable and fun for anyone who enjoys baking but has trouble with long, complicated instructions. . Taste-wise, the mug cake wasn’t that bad. I didn’t have any frosting so when I tried it, the texture was dry and dense. It had a good vanilla flavor so I decided that there was still a chance that I could salvage my cake. I had the idea to use Nutella, since we didn’t have any actual frosting on hand. This made it taste a lot better, and I recommend using additional toppings if you want to be more creative and make a more flavorful cake. This mug cake was really impressive for something made in the microwave. Compared to regular cakes though, it was only okay. Compared to foods normally made in the microwave, it was delicious. It’s great if you want a really easy and simple dessert that won’t make you feel like you’re eating an overly rich or indulgent snack. So, the verdict is out, I recommend this Buzzfeed recipe.

Making the cake was fairly simple, although I recommend using a large mug so that all of the ingredients fit. It was actually really fun and easy to make, so it’s perfect if you just want a quick dessert that doesn’t require complicated ingredients or steps. For me, the biggest challenge was the microwaving process, because the cake overflowed as it was cooking. I had to use a paper towel to clean up the edges multiple times while we were “baking” it. As you can see from the pictures, it was quite messy. I popped the cup in for 1 minute, but had to heat it up more since it was undercooked. In total, the little mug cake spent around 2 minutes and 30 seconds in the microwave. This may vary for each microwave, so if it is undercooked, microwave it in 15 to 30 second intervals until it is fully cooked.

Hey readers, it’s Reina!  Shaina and I made a Buzzfeed mug cake and the result was surprisingly delicious and edible.  I think that the process is a 10/10 because it is extremely simple and is made of ingredients that most people have.  I rate the visual aspect of the mug cake as a 5/10.  This is because although the ingredients are super simple, as are the steps to make it, it doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing.  In addition, as you can see, it kinda overflowed, and is really puffy.  However, when we put on the Nutella, the mug cake looked more tasty.  The cake itself is compact and cool, but also has almost the exact same texture as a normal cake, albeit drier.  I would rate the taste before the Nutella as a 7/10 since there isn’t much in it and still tastes pretty okay.  The sprinkles added a surprising flavor with scrumptious texture and sweetness.  After we added Nutella, though, it tasted more like an 8.5/10, since the creamy and rich chocolate flavor paired with the cake tasted excellent.  I would definitely recommend our readers to try this, but to add either frozen chocolate chips or 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder with 1 ½ tablespoons of granulated sugar for a little more pop.  Okay, Reina signing out. ;p

    Interesting recipe.

Can you please come to our health and nutrition class next Q to write an article about the foods the students are making.
