Race to the White house 2K16

May 9, 2016

Over the past year we’ve seen a lot more from the presidential candidates. They’ve slowly worked their way into our lives and for good reason, these candidates are some of the most aggressive and scandalous ones yet. The Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton has been plagued by scandals over her emails and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has been known to make unfavorable comments towards Muslims and Mexicans. Along with the scandals the Republican party had a very large amount of candidates running leading to a sort of battle royale within the party for the nomination.  Things on the Democratic side appear calmer with only two real major candidates, but grassroots candidate Bernie Sanders is posing a serious threat to Hillary and as such Hillary has desperately tried to obtain youth votes.

The Democratic Candidates

Bernie Sanders is a grassroots candidate, meaning he takes no money from corporations to fund his campaign. According to his official website Sanders wants to bring an end to wealth inequality as well as raise living standards for all Americans. Senator Sanders has proposed multiple policies to achieve these goals, most of which include holding corporations accountable when it comes to tax evasion as well as closing loopholes and raising taxes on the rich. According to CNN writer Tami Luhby, some economists are praising Sanders’ economic plan, saying that it will raise the median income as well as create 26 million jobs. Sanders however has been called a socialist for his policies by other candidates, and he himself identifies as a “democratic socialist.” Sanders’ embrace of socialism shocked many Americans, but he reassured the public that his type of socialism has been successful in many European countries.

Hillary Clinton is the current secretary of state and presidential candidate hopeful. She is less extreme than Bernie when it comes to her proposed policies which take on more of a moderate stance. Hillary’s economic plan according to writer Amy Chozick of the New York Times, “will be focused more towards creating jobs and giving incentives to corporations to stay in America and hire an American work force.” Hillary has also been surrounded by scandals. During a recent democratic debate, Hillary refused to answer a question by Jorge Ramos about her emails. When asked if Hillary would drop out of the race if she was indicted for her email scandal, she responded, “Oh for goodness – that is not going to happen. I am not going to even answer that question.” Hillary, who has been trying to avoid the scandals is desperately reaching out to youth voters, such as the time she appeared on the Ellen show and performed the, “whip and nae nae” dance craze.

The Republican Candidates

Ted Cruz is a large player in the Republican party, while most of the spotlight has gone to Donald Trump, Ted Cruz is desperately trying to garner attention. Ted Cruz believes in, “restoring the constitution” which is about defending free speech and American liberties as well as religious freedoms. Ted Cruz is a major supporter of the second amendment, which gives people the right to bear arms. According to Cruz’s official site, “Citizens’ Second Amendment rights make us more safe, secure, and free.” Ted Cruz has been desperately trying to catch up with Donald Trump, so much in fact that he has even resorted to throwing insults about Trump’s “manhood.” Over the year the rivalry between Ted Cruz and Trump has only escalated and shows no sign of stopping.

Donald Trump is the most prominent candidate in the race. Trump’s campaign has focused around the idea that immigration needs to be kept under control and that America needs to have a stronger presence in the world. Donald Trump is well known for his remarks against Mexicans saying, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” Donald Trump’s many other points involve repealing Obamacare, bringing back American jobs from China, improving the VA, lessening gun control laws, and reforming the American punishment system.

Overall all of these candidates have very different stances on the issues that are plaguing our country. With so many different stances people are divided on who to choose, on the Democratic side people are split whether they should choose the extreme Bernie Sanders or the moderate Hillary Clinton, and on the Republican side it’s even worse with a split between Cruz and Trump. The presidential race has started to heat up and as time goes on the fighting only intensifies. Within the Republican party, candidates are throwing insults at each other in a desperate attempt to make the other look bad and garnish more attention for themselves, and Hillary and Bernie’s relationship has taken a turn for the worse from Bernie saying that Hillary wouldn’t be able to take on Donald Trump to Hillary claiming that Bernie is a sexist. As time passes we can only wait to see what happens next as these feuding candidates escalate their aggressive tactics.

Update: Ted Cruz and John Kasich announced a partnership in an attempt to stop Trump from getting the 1237 delegates needed to outright win. Ted Cruz also announced having Carly Fiorina as his Vice President in an attempt to unify more of the Republican party under him. After an embarrassing defeat in Indiana with Trump taking all 57 delegates, Ted Cruz dropped out and John Kasich soon followed. Donald Trump is now the only remaining Republican nominee and will most likely be going up against Hillary Clinton.
