Harambe the gorilla

December 14, 2016

On May 28, 2016 Harambe a western lowland gorilla was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio.  three year old boy fell into Harambe’s enclosure.  causing a mass panic in the crowd. It wasn’t too long until Harambe saw the three year old and went to investigate and that startled the boys mom. Eventually they called the zookeepers and police and when they arrived, they shot and killed Harambe.

Some people were grieving over the death of Harambe while others were angered by it. The main reason behind the anger is because they felt Harambe didn’t have to die, and argued that he could have been tranquilized instead. The zoo responded and said that a tranquilizer wouldn’t be that quick to put him to sleep, it would have taken 10 minutes or so to put Harambe down and in the meantime Harambe would be panicked and it would have been dangerous for the child. Another thing the public was angered about is that Harambe isn’t just any regular Gorilla, he was a Western Lowland Gorilla which is an endangered species.

The death of Harambe had a lot of mixed emotions. Harambe’s death was certainly saddening at first but now that’s all covered up by the plethora of memes people have made of him. Harambe will always be in our hearts, may he rest in peace.
