Seniors after the end

May 17, 2017

The senior year, “The grand finale”, as some would say. “What happens to the senior class after they graduated?” As a senior myself who has a hard time with school and life in general, I asked the question often myself. Recently, I had a meeting with Mrs. Tamaye and a college counselor discussing my plans after high school. I did not realize how close I am to being done with high school. Just three words to describe the feeling during the meeting, “Wow, I’m close”. Right after the meeting, I felt sad about leaving and going on to the next destination on my life to-do list, the unknown called college. That night, I felt sorry for myself having to do things five times harder than everyone else my age.

I am nervous about mostly everything about college. How am I going to get to the campus? How am I going to make friends? How am I going to take notes for my classes? All of this annoys me even today. Life is a conveyor belt, it only keeps going and going with no way of stopping it. Honestly, going to college and exploring the unknown is a second chance for me to start fresh. I already know how to problem-solve by taking an alternate route or persisting till the end. I am looking forward to that second chance and working my way to success. I am already looking at a few clubs to join to get involved on campus. I’m pretty excited and afraid of what’s to come, a mix of, you can say, two distinct emotions.

The next day after my meetings, I decided to not indulge in self-pity. I challenged myself to see the perspective of my fellow seniors.  I looked beyond my circumstances and, see the other side.  I interviewed three seniors, one that is going to the mainland, one that is staying in the state and one who does not know of what their plans. Their responses are shockingly similar to what I have in mind if I had to answer my own questions. I learned that we are in the same boat, starting out to an unknown place. That is by itself, sad but, as time goes on, it is guaranteed to be easier as you have experiences to sway which way you want to go. We are all going to learn so much next fall about the major you choose and what life has to offer, both good and bad. To sum it up, if there’s a will, there is a way.
