Poetry Club
October 29, 2015
The poetry club is a group of individuals that go to express themselves and is held in C21. Since 2004, there has been some form of poetry club or class at Kalani High School. Mrs. Ajimine, is the current Poetry Club advisor. She has realized that the hardest part as well as the most challenging part of writing poetry is telling your story.
Ms. Ajimine, teaches poets that to make a good poem takes many steps 1) Just write 2) Write about everything 3) Write everyday. 4) Then edit 5) Edit again 6) Write some more and 7) Edit
Mrs. Ajimine says,“ Poetry Club as it exists now is new to Kalani High School. We are not just about Performance Poetry. We are not a competing Slam team. We are a place for students who love to write, to write with other people who love to write…twice a month after school. A place to share your poems with others. If you want to be published, you can be published. If you just want to write for yourself than that is okay too.”
She also explains what her favorite poems are, “My favorite poems were not necessarily the ones that won Slam Poetry competitions. They were the poems that revealed something about the poet that otherwise went unnoticed or hidden. I’ll always remember certain lines of student poems, moments where students were honest with themselves about how they feel.”
