Kahala fire leaves two dead

On Wednesday morning a fire broke out at a Kahala home, killing two people, according to the Honolulu Fire Department. The fire was said to be discovered around 8:10 a.m. on Luakaha Street and later extinguished by 8:25 a.m.

At Kalani High School several blocks away, many students witnessed this tragic event.

“I was in class and I heard that there was a fire so I went to investigate,” Senior Serena Wong exclaimed. “I thought it looked like a big fire because there was a lot of black smoke filling the air, and I was hoping everyone was safe.”

The two-alarm fire occurred at a house in Kahala. Ten units responded as soon as it was detected.

“I was with my grandfather as he was driving and I was just like, ‘Oh damn. That’s huge,’” Freshman Lauren Viera said.

The Star-Advertiser reported that one of those killed was a toddler.

At 11:07 a.m., firefighters are still on the scene.
