The courtyard outside the Kalani gymnasium transformed into a splash zone this past Thursday, Jan. 22, as students gathered for a messy “Pie A Student” fundraiser. Hosted by the Kalani Association of Students during lunch, the event offered a rare opportunity for students to pay for the privilege of “pieing” their peers, all in the name of supporting a local cause.
For a donation of just $2, participants were handed a plate piled high with whipped cream and a clear shot at one of five student volunteers. The brave five — Xavier Strong, Caleb Kazarian, Davis Summers, Kai Wolf, and Abby Nii — sat in a chair while classmates smushed a pie into their face. Abby Nii seemed to be the most popular target, and her glasses were caked in whipped cream by the end of the event.
The event was for a good cause; organizers confirmed that 100% of the proceeds from the afternoon are being donated to Aloha United Way, an organization dedicated to improving health, education, and financial stability across the islands, according to their website.
