Every year during the fall season, the Kalani High School air riflery team holds tryouts for its boys and girls varsity teams. Each person who tries out has the shot of getting to participate in competitions against different high schools on the island.
Air riflery is a varsity sport that teaches athletes to have a proper stance, breathing techniques, trigger control, and concentration. Students in air riflery are also taught safety, responsibility and mental focus as the core values.
One of these students is Jaycie Shinsato (10). Shinsato was ranked number one during their match against Roosevelt High School on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Kaimuki High School on Saturday, Sept. 27.
“One of my favorite things about air riflery is the connections that I’m able to make with all of my fellow peers,” Shinsato says.
Coached by Coach Subramaiam and Coach Craig, the air riflery team allows newer members to learn how to properly use a gun, while it also allows students who have already learned how to use a gun to get more practice and experience.
Shinsato highly recommends that more people join air riflery.
“I think that this team gives people a great opportunity to learn different skills that could be helpful later on in life,” Shinsato says. “I also really think that it could help with your attention span and with your hand-eye coordination.”
While the season has already started for air riflery, tryouts for the next fall season will be held next year during the first week of school.
