The Kalani High School Girls Junior Varsity Basketball Team is kicking off the 2025-2026 season with determination, focusing on teamwork, skill development, and resilience despite a smaller roster than last year. Early practices have emphasized communication and collaboration, setting the tone for what players hope will be a season of growth and memorable moments.
Under the guidance of new Head Coach AJ DeJesus, the Falcons aim to develop a fast-paced yet disciplined playing style. The combination of returning players and new faces provides the team with both familiarity and fresh energy heading into the season.
“It’s promising,” he says. “We have a lot of new faces, some familiar faces, and even though it’s just a few practices in, we have a lot of good foundation to build on.”
According to DeJesus, the team’s biggest strength this season is going to be “grit,” especially with fewer players available for substitutions during games. He stresses that exerting full effort and pushing through fatigue with strength, endurance, and determination is “crucial” for success.
“I’m looking forward to what’s in store,” he states.
While improving basketball skills such as dribbling, court awareness, and game IQ remains a key focus, DeJesus emphasizes that communication and accountability off the court are equally important.
“A lot of you guys, it could be your first time playing basketball,” DeJesus explains. “It could be your fifth year playing basketball. Just have fun. Always keep an open mind and be wanting to learn.”
Returning player Kierstyn Kapahua-Kahele (10) expresses that she hopes to take on a leadership role this season, helping freshmen adjust both on and off the court. She wants to guide the team through communication and encouragement.
“I’m most excited for just getting to know more new girls and seeing how we can use our teamwork to accomplish our goals for the end of the season,” she says.
New member Alana Alosa (9) states that the returning players help her feel comfortable by explaining drills and offering support. She hopes to contribute in the upcoming games while improving through practices.
“I’m excited to play with new people and to experience what it’s like to play on a JV team,” Alosa explains.
Another returning player, Chloe Murata (10), notes that the smaller roster could actually be an opportunity to strengthen the team’s bond and chemistry. She believes that “motivation” will play a major role in the team’s development this year.
“I hope to really get better at my post moves and get more physical with the other teams,” Murata states.
As the Falcons prepare for the season ahead, their shared mindset centers on growth, perseverance, and unity.
“For you girls this season, just have fun,” DeJesus points out.
