A pacific golden plover (Pluvialis fulva) and a house sparrow. Though many of Kalani’s birds are socially well adapted, the plover is one exception. Called kōlea in Hawaiian, aptly meaning “one who takes and leaves,” it is largely solitary in nature. In this rare instance, the plover relents to share a piece of bread with the sparrow, though not before several failed attempts to scare the latter away.

Among the scores of new faculty that joined Kalani High School this year, Dana-Joy Hayashi doesnt see Kalani from the same viewpoint. Joining the office staff in June 2021, Hayashis role is to oversee office staff and aid administration, rather than teaching and advising students in the classroom. Her list of duties is exhaustive, ranging from secretarial tasks to fiscal management, tacked on top of administering student, staff, and school records. Nevertheless, she feels every role here is an integral part to which makes the Kalani Falcons, and looks forward to being a part of this awesome team! Photo and caption by Virgil Lin.

School halls remain largely empty, even as Kalani High School allows seniors to return to class on Monday, Nov. 23. The majority of students - freshmen, sophomores, and juniors - now receive schooling online, a months-long development that Kalani student Joseph Kim (10) describes as “kinda scuffed.” Photo and caption by Virgil Lin.
